Games of the Day

The Cubs magic number is five against the Cardinals, four against the Brewers, as they try to knock the Brewers number down to two. Kyle Hendricks takes on Brent Suter. Hendricks allowed five home runs in 22 innings against Milwaukee, giving him a 4.91 ERA against the division rivals in four starts. Suter shows better control as a starter than as a reliever, with 15 walks in 60 innings during his 12 starts.

The Yankees magic number for a wild card berth is one. They can win, or both the Angels and Rangers can lose. New York sends Sonny Gray against the Blue Jays and Joe Biagini. Gray allowed eight home runs in 54 2/3 innings for the Yankees, after allowing eight home runs in 97 innings for the Athletics. Biagini owns a 5.33 ERA overall, but 5.77 as a starter. He’s 0-2 against the Yankees, but has not allowed a home runs to them in 8 2/3 innings. With his blast Friday night, Aaron Judge now has a 14% chance of breaking Mark McGwire‘s rookie home run record of 49.

The Cardinals continue to hang on as Lance Lynn battles the Pirates and Gerritt Cole. Lynn is 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA against the Pirates this season, and for his career is 3-3 with a 4.27 ERA in Pittsburgh. Cole pitched mostly well, but saw his home run rate skyrocket as he allowed 30 dingers. His single season high coming into 2017 was 11.
