On the Verge of a Record

MLB is on the cusp of setting a league home run record:

Nearly two decades after the height of the Steroids Era, the sport is on track to break its season record for home runs on Tuesday — and not just top the old mark, but smash it like one of those upper-deck shots that have become commonplace in the Summer of the Slugger.

There were 5,663 home runs hit through Sunday, 30 shy of the record set in 2000.

This much more of a middle class home run surge. In 2000, 16 players hit 40 or more home runs, one of them reaching into the 50s. At the other end, 170 players hit between 10 and 29 home runs. This season, three players reached the 40 HR mark so far, but 200 players stand between 10 and 29 homers. Everyone is a home run hitter today.
