Boyd in the Ninth

Matt Boyd takes a no-hitter into the ninth inning, the Tigers leading the White Sox 12-0. Boyd walked one batter and struck out five as he received some excellent defensive work behind him. He is scheduled to face the 8-9-1 hitters, Adam Engel, Rob Brantly, and Tim Anderson. Boyd threw 105 pitches so far, 67 for strikes. This could be his first complete game.

Update: Engel gets ahead 2-1. He pops up the next pitch to the third baseman in foul territory. One down.

Update: Kevin Smith pinch hits.

Update: Smith falls behind 0-2. He grounds the next pitch to second base for the second out.

Update: Anderson gets ahead 2-0. He hits the next pitch over the deep into the right-center gap for a double. The no-hitter is over.

Update: Boyd gets the next batter to ground out, and he does earn his first career shutout.

Weird day. WS had the Tigers number all weekend, pitching and hitting, as did the Yankees vs. the Orioles. Today both scripts got flipped.

Just goes to show you you can’t predict baseball, Suzyn.
