Bettis Back

Chad Bettis made a triumphant return to the majors Monday night, back from his battle with cancer. He threw seven shutout innings, but did not get the win as Julio Teheran matched that part of the performance. The Rockies did get to the Atlanta bullpen to win 3-0.

Bettis put the ball in the strike zone and let his defense do the work. He threw 90 pitches, 63 for strikes, and did not walk a batter. He struck out just two, but the Braves managed just six hits. Four of those hits went for extra bases, but all came with the bases empty, one resulted in a batter thrown out on the bases, and the three doubles each came with one out. The Braves went 0 for seven with runners in scoring position against Bettis, 0 for 8 for the game.

In general, allowing the ball in play at Coors Field is not a great idea, but Bettis made it work.
