Duke of Earlbow

Zach Duke makes an historic recovery from Tommy John surgery.

It took him 287 days. According to research by Jon Roegele, published by FanGraphs here, Duke’s return ranks as the fastest by an MLB pitcher in the past decade.

“It’s amazing, the process of how they are continuing to push the needle forward, on how they are improving on not just the procedure but the rehab,” Matheny said. “Our (medical team) did a terrific job. Zach did too, staying the course, doing what he was told, and nothing more. He did exactly what they said. He came prepared to do exactly what they were ready for. His body just responded very quickly.”

Duke’s return is a testament to the doctors, the Cardinals’ approach and, of course, the pitcher’s drive.

Even better, some pitchers are having luck healing partial tears without surgery.
