Broken Face

Colin Moran of the Astros fouled pitch off his face and will need surgery:

Moran is likely to undergo surgery, according to Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow, who said Moran sustained a fracture or a displacement in two separate areas of his face. Moran’s vision is fine, manager A.J. Hinch said. He spent the night in a Baltimore hospital undergoing an array of tests.

Given the injury, it seems unlikely Moran will contribute to the Astros again this season. He was officially placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday morning. Tyler White was recalled from Class AAA to fill the vacant spot on the active roster.

“Whether or not he comes back in time to play this year is still to be determined,” Luhnow said. “We’ll know a lot more at the end of this week. He’s certainly going to miss some significant time.”

Moran was playing in just his 11th MLB game, and second this season. After a poor cup of coffee in 2016, Moran was off to a good start this year, 3 for 6 with a triple and a home run. He was hitting .308/.373/.543 at Fresno this year.
