Games of the Day

The Cubs travel to Washington as Eddie Butler faces Gio Gonzalez. Butler owns some unusual stats this season. He allows a .236 BA despite a low strikeout rate. That has not translated into a low ERA, however, as his walks are nearly even with his strikeouts; the walks are too high and the Ks are too low. Even though he only allowed three home runs, 15 of his 34 hits went for extra bases. Gonzalez comes into the game with a 7-1 record and a 2.96 ERA. This despite giving up 12 home runs and 40 walks in 94 1/3 innings. Opponents are hitting just .107 against him, 8 for 75, with runners in scoring position. He also has a strange home/road split, where his ERAs do not match his records. At home, in seven starts, he is 1-0 with a 1.66 ERA. On the road, he is 6-1 despite a 4.06 ERA.

Playoff contenders Minnesota and Boston pit Jose Berrios against Chris Sale. Berrios is Mr. Decision, 7-1 in eight starts this season. The second year pitcher is averaging nearly seven innings a start as he posts a 2.67 ERA. Sale is on a pace to easily pass 300 strikeouts this season, with 146 in 107 1/3 innings. His single season high was 274 in 208 2/3 innings in 2015.

Cole Hamels takes the mound for Texas for the first time in two months as he faces the Indians and Carlos Carrasco. Hamels strikeouts were way down before the oblique injury diagnosis, just fanning 15 batters in 32 2/3 innings. Look to see if that improves today. Carrasco allowed seven of his nine home runs at home this season.
