Game of the Day

The Padres finish their series with the Mets as Dinelson Lamet makes his major league debut for San Diego against Jason deGrom. At seasonal age 24, Lamet is blowing away batters at AAA, recording 50 strikeouts in just 39 innings. Throughout his minor league career, he got away with a high walk rate as his strikeouts limit hits, and he allows very few home runs. On the other hand, deGrom blows away batters at the major league level, with 76 K in 55 2/3 innings. Unlike Lamet, deGrom issues very few walks, but does give up home runs.

Enjoy!

Ivan Nova couldn’t quite get his 3rd CG of the season, pitching into the 9th in a W against the Braves.

Since Nova came over to the Pirates last July, he has 5 CG in 21 starts & only 7 walks in 134 innings!

Timothy » So that’s Burnett and Nova, former Yankees the Pirates turned around. I believe they both reduced their walk totals. It’s funny how the Pittsburgh pitching coaches get little praise, compared to say the Braves coaches in the 1990s.

The Mets moved DeGrom’s start to tomorrow because they didn’t want him pitching in today’s weather. That must make substitute starter Rafael Montero feel good!

Steve H » Right. Then again, it gave Montero a chance to shine, and the Mets don’t possibly waste a start by an excellent pitcher.
