First Elbow of the Spring

The Cardinals seem rather concerned about Alex Reyes‘s elbow:

Reyes was sent for a scan of his right elbow Tuesday so that the team could determine the severity of a likely sprain in the joint that caused discomfort last week. One possible outcome the team is braced for is that the young, flame-throwing prospect will require elbow reconstruction, or Tommy John surgery, and miss the 2017 season. The team and its medical officials will meet Wednesday morning to discuss treatment for one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, and Reyes’ MRI will be sent to Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion.

“There’s reason for concern,” general manager John Mozeliak said. “If you’re going to boil it down, any time you’re taking someone to get an MRI, it’s not great news. We’ll just wait and see and react accordingly.”

It’s not a great way to open camp. He would play 2017 as a 22-year-old, averaged over twelve strikeouts per nine innings in the minors, and 10.2 K per 9 IP in his 46 MLB innings. He is young enough that he could sustain the injury and still have a good career.
