The Rodriguez Reason for the Phillips Trade

Sean Rodriguez suffered a more severe injury in his car accident than first reported:

Braves general manager John Coppolella said Monday he isn’t sure whether it is realistic to hope for a return this season of infielder Sean Rodriguez, who will have shoulder surgery.

Rodriguez, who agreed to an $11.5 million, two-year contract with Atlanta in November, hurt his shoulder when a vehicle he was driving was rammed by a stolen police car in Miami on Jan. 28. His wife Giselle and two of their children were hospitalized with injuries she said on her Twitter account were not life-threatening.

Rodriguez’s shoulder injury was not immediately disclosed. Coppolella told The Associated Press that Rodriguez’s surgery hasn’t been finalized.

“He’s going to be out indefinitely,” Coppolella said. “We hope he comes back as soon as possible. We’re not sure yet if it’s realistic that will be for the 2017 season. We don’t have enough information.”

That’s why they wanted Brandon Phillips. I don’t know if the Reds knew about the Rodriguez injury. If they did, they probably would not have picked up as much of Phillips contract. Nice move by the Braves to replace an expensive, injured player with one being paid by another team.

It was first reported he was uninjured. The source of the untruth is not known but I remember being skeptical. This is why you cant trust what teams and players say about health

At this point, I don’t think the Reds cared about anything other than moving BP. They have too many young infielders — Eugenio Suarez (who’s going to be a star) & Jose Peraza specifically, plus vet Cozart, to be able to keep BP. They’d been trying to trade him for years (& he kept rejecting, due to his no-trade clause).
