It looks like the Reds will finally clear Brandon Phillips from their roster:
The Cincinnati Reds are close to finalizing a deal that would send veteran second baseman Brandon Phillips to the Atlanta Braves, a source told FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.
The deal, expected to be completed on Sunday after Phillips is cleared medically, would send Phillips to his hometown team.
Phillips is owed $14 million in 2017, though the Reds are expected to pick up the bulk of that obligation. The move is said to be an effort for the Reds to thin out a surplus of infielders.
It will also make the team younger. The Reds tried trading Phillips last season, but Phillips invoked his 10-5 rights to stay with the team. It looks like Atlanta is a place he wants to play. Phillips is still a decent player, and the Reds get his services for basically nothing. Atlanta now has a bit of a logjam in the middle infield with Sean Rodriguez and Jace Peterson also capable of playing second. I’m guessing someone moves to third if the deal goes through.
Rodriguez will be out for 3-5 months post car crash
