Morales to the Blue Jays

Multiple sources indicate the Blue Jays agreed to a three-year, $33 million deal with Kendrys Morales. That looks like they value him at about 1.3 WAR a year, a reasonable estimate.

It had seemed that Toronto would at least spend a bit more time looking into a return for Edwin Encarnacion, who had continued to express a preference to return. With this signing, though, he seems destined to head elsewhere. It is still theoretically possible that a reunion with Encarnacion could come together, as he’d be slated for first with Morales at DH. But that’s tough to imagine, as it would tie up a huge amount of the available payroll space and leave the team without any improvement in the corner outfield.

If Morales is replace Encarnacion, it’s a huge fall off as Encarnacion was a two to three WAR player. I suspect they will be looking for a very big bat at some other position.

I’m not crazy about the deal. Morales will play 2017 as a 34-year-old, one who may be in decline. Two years, $23 million might have served Toronto better.
