Crash Investigation

Some details are coming out about the boat crash that killed Jose Fernandez and two friends:

A search warrant affidavit says the bodies of Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and two of his friends had a strong odor of alcohol on them when they were recovered by divers following a boat crash off Miami Beach.

The warrant released by the Miami-Dade state attorney’s office Wednesday also says investigators found evidence that the boat was speeding when it slammed into a jetty Sept. 25.

Alcohol and speeding suggest there was recklessness involved in the crash. People who have been celebrating the life of Fernandez might need to prepare themselves for his demise being possibly more criminal than accidental.

Late night accidents involving speed and with young men driving almost always involve alcohol or drugs, especially when no other vehicles are involved. Oscar Taveras accident also involved alcohol although this did not come out right away.

It does make you wonder why police said there was no evidence alcohol was involved when divers could smell it, but whatever. Supposedly they have been sitting on the toxicology results for the last 3 weeks.

In both cases its not only the player drinking that was killed, but in Taveras case his 18 yo GF and Fernandez 2 friends. Of course, its possible one of Fernandez friends was driving the boat, but its his boat. Seems MLB/MLBPA should consider some DUI penalties to discourage this.
