Games of the Day

The Cy Young races figure prominently today. Clayton Kershaw makes his 21st start of the season for the Dodgers, and that low number may keep him out of contention. He won’t qualify for the ERA title, but with a 1.65 ERA in 142 innings, 168 K, 10 BB, and seven home runs allowed, he should be in the conversation. He is 2-0 against the Giants with a 1.86 ERA, meaning about 1/4 of his starts will have been against his team’s biggest rival and biggest competition for the NL West title.

Jon Lester, fresh off his Baseball Musings Pitcher of the Month win, leads the Cubs on the Reds. Lester in 1.5 points behind Max Scherzer in Tom Tango Cy Young tracker points, so a great game today will put one of the Cubs aces in command of the prize.

The Blue Jays try to help J.A. Happ to his 21st win as Toronto tries to hold off Detroit and Seattle for a wild card slot. Happ is well behind Justin Verlander and Rick Procello in Cy Young tracker points, but his high win total and good ERA in a tough home park should garner him some votes. Beating the division leading Red Sox on Big Papi weekend will make him look good going into the voting. He is 2-0 against Boston with a 2.08 ERA this season.

Enjoy!
