Kim Kong

Hyun Soo Kim pinch hits in the ninth for the Orioles with a man on first base, and hits his sixth home run of the season. That turns a 2-1 Blue Jays lead into a 3-2 Orioles lead as the teams battle for the wild card.

Watching the replay, it looked like Kim closed his eyes as he contacted the ball.

If the Blue Jays lose or the Red Sox win, Toronto is out of contention for the AL East title. The Red Sox lead the Yankees 3-0 in the ninth.

Update: The Orioles win 3-2, and the Toronto loss gives the Red Sox the AL East title.

Update: If the Red Sox beat the Yankees, New York is eliminated from playoff contention.

Update: A slightly different Kim, Craig Kimbrel, tries to get the save for the Red Sox. He gives up a lead-off single, then walks three in a row to reduce the Red Sox lead to 3-1. The Yankees have the bases loaded and no one out.

Update: With two out and the bases loaded, Mark Teixeira hits a grand slam to win the game for the Yankees. New York keeps their wild card hopes alive.

This was very interesting to watch. The Red Sox knew for an inning that they won the AL East, but they walk off the field a bit dejected. They are hugging each other in the dugout, but I think they wanted to win on the field and celebrate on the field.

This also means that it’s that much tougher for the Red Sox to win best record in the AL for the Red Sox. Lots of late inning drama in the AL East tonight.
