Twins Ops

The Twins are prepared to announce Derek Falvey as the new head of baseball operations. It appears he is replacing Terry Ryan, so baseball operations in Minnesota appears to be a higher ranking position than in Cleveland, where Falvey was under the GM.

Falvey gained experience in Cleveland’s amateur and international scouting departments, but focused on player acquisition in his role as assistant GM. His hiring follows an industry trend of executives with a strong statistical and analytical background, but he also combines that knowledge with experience working with scouts.

The Twins announced earlier this month that they plan to expand the baseball operations department, with the new presidential-level executive hiring a general manager to handle day-to-day player acquisition matters.

Ryan was a good seat of the pants GM, but that doesn’t appear to be enough anymore when so many teams are pushing the envelope of data analysis.
