The K Game, or This one Goes to 11

The Red Sox set two strikeout records against the Rays on Sunday:

Boston Red Sox left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez and right-hander Heath Hembree combined to strike out 11 consecutive batters to establish a major league-record on Sunday in a 3-2, 10-inning victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

The New York Mets held the previous mark when Tom Seaver struck out 10 in a row against San Diego on Apr. 22, 1970.

Boston also set a club record by striking out 21 batters through nine innings. Kelly added two more in the 10th as the Red Sox won their 11th consecutive game.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the 21 strikeouts would have been a major league record for a nine-inning game but isn’t a record since the game went to extra innings.

Once again, Elias gets it wrong. If a team sets a record in the first nine innings of a game, it should be noted as such with the other records. This happened when Randy Johnson struck out 20 in nine innings, but the game went into extras. Elias would not credit Johnson with tying Roger Clemens and Kerry Wood. We all know it’s a record.

It’s appropriate that they struck out 11 in a row in their 11th win in a row. They’ll need that many wins in the post-season to bring home another World Series trophy.
