Cy Young Races Tighten

Jon Lester and Jose Fernandez each threw seven shutout innings for a win Friday night while Madison Bumgarner gave up four runs in six innings, causing the NL Tom Tango Cy Young Tracker points race to tighten. Lester moves up to fourth in the race, behind his own teammate Kyle Hendricks. Fernandez, thanks to 14 K in the game, is now sixth, about 11 points behind Bumgarner. Fernandez would need two very good starts while the rest of the field fumbled to get close to the top. Max Scherzer, less than three points behind Bumgarner, pitches on Saturday against the Phillies and a good outing would move him to the top of the list.

Rick Porcello won his 20th game of the season, the first pitcher in the majors to hit that milestone this season. He allowed two runs in seven innings while striking out seven to gain on Chris Sale. Both Sale and Porcello threw exactly 193 2/3 innings this season. Sale allowed three fewer earned runs and struck out 32 more batters, but Porcello owns five more wins. Here’s a better side by side comparison. With more Ks, Sale allows fewer hits, but Procello makes up for that with fewer walks. Both give up about the same number of home runs and each hit 12 batters. I suspect that if the Red Sox make the playoffs, that will push Porcello to the top of the ballot.
