Bruce to the Mets, Reds Find Nimmo

The Mets acquired Jay Bruce from the Reds for two prospects:

In return, the Mets send second baseman Dilson Herrera and lefthanded pitcher Max Wotell. Originally the deal included outfielder Brandon Nimmo, according to multiple industry sources, but there were issues with the physical of one of the prospects. Sandy Alderson said there were changes to the deal as the day went on.

The Mets GM was also able to negate a terrible free agency signing right under the wire of the 4 p.m. deadline. He sent lefty reliever Antonio Bastardo and cash to the Pirates and took back lefthander Jon Niese in what is basically a wash of contracts.

Wotell is just seasonal age 19, but is blowing away batters in rookie ball. Herrera is seasonal age 21, and already has 169 MLB plate appearances. In the minors, he hit for average, got on base, and hit for some power. Not a bad prospect, one who has plenty of time to develop.

Bruce brings power to the Mets, but power is already a Mets strength. With the recent injuries, the Mets needed more depth in the outfield, and Bruce gives them that with the ability to blast the ball. With luck the Mets won’t find Bruce’s name confusing.
