Racing Back

At the All-Star break it looked like the only division with an interesting race for first would be the AL East. Since then, however, the divisions tightened up a bit, especially in the two out west. Detroit is now 4 1/2 games behind the Indians after a win and a loss by Cleveland today. The once seemingly invincible Cubs are 6 1/2 games in front of the Cardinals. The Giants and Dodgers both lost Wednesday afternoon, so the Giants maintained their 2 1/2 game lead. The Nationals are now fending off a threat from the Marlins, four games out in the NL East with the Mets five back.

The wild card races remain tight as well, with five teams separated by 4 1/2 games in the National League, and seven teams separated by six games in the American League. I was afraid too many teams were going to cruise to a division title, but in the last two weeks, things became a bit more exciting.
