Flipping Relievers

Mike Axisa talks about teams that might be interested in trading with the Yankees for Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller. The Yankees seem to be in a very good position to bring in some new talent to the team. If New York decides to be a seller at the deadline. They should trade both Chapman and Miller to further reduce the age of the team.

First, Dellin Betances can probably handle the closer role, so New York won’t really be losing a closer. Second, good setup relievers seem to be growing on trees right now. Teams groom young pitchers for these jobs, where they no longer come on in the middle of an inning, but start the sixth, seventh, or eighth inning and throw hard for three or four batters. In other words, building a bullpen isn’t that difficult. So if the demand for Miller and Chapman is as high as it seems, the Yankees should take advantage of the market and get as many good players as possible.

If building a bullpen is not that hard, then why haven’t the Tigers won a couple of recent World Series?
