Cano Healthy Again

The Mariners pounded the Athletics Wednesday night, winning a laugher 13-3. Adam Lind hit two home runs and a double among his four hits, breaking out of a season long slump in one night. Nelson Cruz collected three hits, including a home run. Robinson Cano continued to prove he’s healthy with two more hits and a home run, raising his slash line to .295/.345/.584.

Through this point last season, Cano was mired in an as yet unexplained slump. It turns out he was suffering from a parasite. He hit better in the second half, and that has continued into 2016.

One thing that is back to normal for Robinson is his strikeout rate. In 2015, Cano struck out a total of 107 times, the highest single season total of his career. So far, he’s struck out just 28 times, more in line with his career norms. Fewer strikeouts should provide him with a few more hits. It’s another sign that he’s healthy, too. Cano was always good at making contact, and with 14 home runs already, he making solid contact this season. That helped put the Mariners in first place, which was expected to happen last season. I wonder if Cano was healthy all year if the front office changes would have happened?
