Arrieta in the Ninth

Jake Arrieta takes a no-hitter and a 16-0 Cubs lead over the Reds into the ninth inning. The Reds are scheduled to send up Scott Schebler, the pitcher’s slot, and Zack Cozart.

Arrieta threw a no-hitter last year on Aug. 30th at the Dodgers. Including that game, he made ten regular season starts before tonight, allowing 37 hits in 77 innings and just six runs, five of them earned. Impressive.

Update: Schebler gets ahead 2-1. He works the count full. A low inside pitch leads to a walk.

This would be the most lopsided no-hitter of the modern era.

Update: Tucker Barnhart pinch hits.

Update: Barnhart pops up a 1-1 pitch to shortstop for the first out.

Update: Cozart hits an 0-1 pitch to centerfield for the second out.

Update: Eugenio Suárez bats.

Update: Schebler takes second on the first pitch, a strike. Suarez falls behind 0-2. Pitch three was on the edge but not called. Suarez pops up a 2-2 pitch to rightfield, and Jake Arrieta throws his second no-hitter in a span of 11 regular season starts!
