Games of the Day

Tampa Bay faces their former star in Boston as Jake Odorizzi takes on David Price. The 7:45s singing group from Williams Middle School in my home town of Longmeadow will sing the National Anthem. Odorizzi is off to a good start with a 2.41 ERA after three games. He’s struck out 20 in 18 2/3 innings, but his good pitching has not earned him a win. Price is striking out batters at a higher rate, 27 batters in 18 innings. His four home runs allowed, however, helped him to a 4.50 ERA. With better support, however, Price owns a 2-0 record.

The Cubs travel to Cincinnati as Jake Arrieta faces Brandon Finnegan and the Reds. Arrieta picked up where he left off in 2015, allowing just three runs in his first 22 innings. He gave up 150 hits in 229 innings in 2015, 15 hits in 22 innings this year. Finnegan showed wildness this year, but he’s also been unhittable. He allowed eight hits and ten walks so far for a .129 BA allowed and a .250 OBP.

The Astros and Rangers finish their series in Texas with Dallas Keuchel battling A.J. Griffin. Keuchel appears to be trading home runs for walks this year. His walk rate is more than double his 2015 level, but he has yet to allow a home run. The balance gives him a 2.18 ERA. Griffin pitched with mixed results against the Astros in his career. He struck out 32 batters in 24 innings but allowed five homers. The latter led to a 4.88 ERA.
