Docking the Cardinals

Via Giants Win, Jeff Passan joins the chorus calling for the Cardinals to lose a draft pick over the Astros computer hacking scandal:

If Major League Baseball doesn’t dock the Cardinals draft picks in addition to a seven-figure fine, it is not just tacitly approving the computer crimes to which Correa pleaded guilty on Friday but encouraging similar nefariousness among other teams.

Given the Cardinals ability to build through the draft, the loss of draft picks would be a serious punishment.

I dislike the draft pick loss. There is a cascading effect over when someone gets a contract, but it does mean that somewhere a player will get less compensation, so rather than being a final round pick a kid will be an undrafted free agent and get no compensation. Which is a harm to someone completely unconnected to the crime. How about a financial penalty to the club plus a month or so of unpaid leave to the GM and team president.

I would think forfeiting their picks in the 1st 3-5 rounds would be a just and deterring punishment.

Give the Cardinals 1st round pick to the Astros.

Must set an example to other teams, crime does not pay, and you are responsible for the actions of your employees, especially if you benefit
