Cheating Cardinals

Chris Correa, The man responsible for the Cardinals hacking the Astros database entering a guilty plea Friday:

The former scouting director of the St. Louis Cardinals pleaded guilty Friday to criminal charges in connection with an unauthorized breach of the Houston Astros computer network. It was the first known case of cyber-espionage involving a professional sports team hacking into another team’s database.

Appearing in Houston federal court, Mr. Correa pled guilty to five counts of unauthorized access to computer information. Each count carries a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Correa was able to get the ranked list of draft candidates from the Astros. I just wonder if he did this on his own, or if others in the Cardinals organization knew and did nothing to stop it.

Most scouting directors don’t have the expertise to hack into systems and use masking software. Its seems likely he had help. IT department? Also, he was doing so for over a year and supposedly found evidence they had proprietary information (he says), which was his reason for hacking into the system, so you would think he would have reported this to his superiors.

The idea he was a lone gunman seems pretty weak to me

In any event, I think the Cardinals at least should lose a 1st round pick
