Catching the Master

It's a rare occasion in which I catch Rob Neyer in an error, so here it is:

By my count, after the Twins move into their new palace next spring, only the Dodgers and the Red Sox will play in older homes than the A's. But Dodger Stadium and Fenway Park are both baseball-only cash cows, while the A's are sharing with the Raiders, and nobody shows up even when they're winning.

Wrigley Field is nearly as old as Fenway, and Angel Stadium opened the same year as the Coliseum, but the baseball season came first.

Still, I like Rob's idea of moving the A's to Portland, although I'd prefer Maine to Oregon. :-)

Moving the A's to Portland is a terrible idea. The Bay Area can still thrive as a two-team market. Just give the A's back territorial rights to Santa Clara county (the A's gave them to the Giants, now it's time to return the favor). If the A's move to San Jose (the heart of Silicon Valley --- 35 miles south of Oakland) they will experience an Anaheim-like turnaround in attendance.

The A's should move to Sacramento

Moving to Portland is an awesome idea.

I grew up there. I remember watching the Blazers play as a kid, and going to Eugene Emeralds games (Mike Schmidt was an em).

The Blazers have been treated well there. They hold the record for the longest home game sellout streak in professional sports -from 1977 through 1995.

Oregon should be host to an MLB franchise (& NFL, god willing). California doesn't need three anymore than Maryland needs two.

Why would the A's be any more successful in getting a stadium built in Santa Clara than anyone else has been over the past 30 years? Remember that the Giants tried and eventually gave up and "settled" for their current location. And the 49ers Stadium may never get built.

I've felt for years that they would eventually end up in Sacramento.

If you think that this is Neyer's first mistake, in his otherwise excellent book on the all-time best players (by position) for each club, he picked Trot Nixon over Duey Evans as Red Sox all-time RF.
