Blaming Selig

Bud Selig is upset that people blame him for the steroid era:

"I don't want to hear the commissioner turned a blind eye to this or he didn't care about it," Selig said. "That annoys the you-know-what out of me. You bet I'm sensitive to the criticism. The reason I'm so frustrated is, if you look at our whole body of work, I think we've come farther than anyone ever dreamed possible."

Bud blames the union for fighting him on the issue. It's a valid point, but Bud was in charge, and fair or not, the person in charge gets the blame. Maybe if Bud and the owners hadn't spent the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s trying to rid themselves of the union, they might have gained more cooperation when people started to realize that players were using PEDs.

Efff off, Bud. Your day has passed. You blew it, and now YOUR legacy is forever tied to steroids, not all those other things.

Selig couldn't have unilaterally imposed stricter rules, but he sure could have used his bully pulpit. He chose not to, at a time when baseball was getting an (artificial) injection of energy from the longball circus of the late 90s and early 00s.

He has also said that he didn't know what was going on, which is ridiculous. There were plenty of signs, right down to Barry's hat size and back acne. Bud may have chosen not to know or not to explore the issue, but he doesn't get a pass for willful ignorance. As WillClark said above, Bud's legacy is tied to steroids, and I really don't think he has grounds to complain about it.
