Squelching a Rumor

I've seen a number of posts today that Ken Griffey, Jr. was close to signing with the Mariners, but Ken says no.

"We don't know what we're doing next year with respect to Seattle. It's all rumors," Griffey said Thursday after finishing his round at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in California.

Would the Dodgers try to use Griffey as leverage against Manny now that Abreu and Dunn are out of the picture?

You got a good idea for the Dodgers here. Wherever Griff goes, he'd be smart to stay in the AL where he can DH when he gets too injured to play a fielding position.

Boras won't fall for that. Griffey might have a couple of more decent seasons--getting him on the list of "four decade" players--and he even has an outside shot of passing Willie Mays for fourth on the all time HR list, but he's not remotely in Manny's class as a hitter any more and everyone knows it--including Junior himself.
