Bad Things 'Bout the Mets

Darryl Strawberry penned a book about his days with the Mets, who appeared to be lusty, zesty men.

"We were the boys of summer. The drunk, speed-freak, sneaking-a-smoke boys of summer," writes onetime home-run legend Darryl Strawberry in "Straw: Finding My Way," out in April from Ecco. "[An] infamous rolling frat party . . . drinking, drugs, fights, gambling, groupies."

I remember talking to a colleague of mine who worked on Mets broadcasts about Keith Hernandez. I made some comment about Keith Hernandez stopping cocaine use after his conviction, and my friends said, "What makes you think he stopped?" Keith and Ron Darling might have an interesting time in the Mets booth this summer.

The Mets did illegal drugs in 1984, and I believe that cocaine can help you play better, or more. It gives you more pep. So is their 1984 WS championship tainted?

They won the series in '86. The Tigers won it in '84. If you are going to try to make snarky comments, do a little research first.

Indeed.

Hey, those were my college years. No wonder I got them messed up.

But the point does remain. If we are going to go after PED users and not recognize their numbers, what about earlier teams that used other substances that may have given them an edge?

Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb, Jimmie Foxx, Hack Wilson and hundreds of other ballplayers all used illegal, performance enhancing drugs. They played and drank during Prohibition when alcohol was illegal. No one seems to care about that.
