Varitek to Retire?

Jason Varitek is threatening to sit out the 2009 season. Given the environment for free agents, I suspect the Red Sox would be happy to take him up on the offer.

Twice, the Red Sox have offered a 37 year old catcher, who hit .220 last season, millions more then any other team in baseball. I'm not sure what exactly Varitek's problem is here...

On that note, I'm curious. I've seen lots of people bragging about how well Varitek calls a game, but the only actual numbers I've seen are his W-L. There are plenty of quotes from pitchers and coaches, but, well, every player has that. Is there anything beyond the fact that the pitchers for a team with good pitchers like the Red Sox generally pitch well?

Going out the same way he came in—as a money-grubbing jerk
