Teixeira on the Other Bidders

Nationals Journal posts some comments from Mark Teixeira related to his negotiations with Washington:

Teixeira on Nats: "With Ted Lerner and his family -- man, what an impressive guy. That guy is a very successful businessman and he's trying to make the Nationals a successful team. The Nationals and Orioles were definitely up there -- a chance to play close to home. But my goals as a ballplayer, to be a world champion, the Yankees were just so far above and beyond everyone else in that realm."

The Yankees, among all his bidders, were "beyond everybody else" to getting a World Series ring. And here I thought the 2004 and 2007 WS champion Red Sox were bidding for Tex's services. I guess I was mistaken.

They were so far beyond everyone else - at least in what they were willing to pay.

If I'm reading between the lines correctly, Teixeira is implying (not in the bit excerpted here but in the Washington Post article) that his wife didn't want him to sign with the Red Sox.

There is no doubt that the Yankees will spend to win a championship, but that shouldn't be confused with being "so far above and beyond everyone else."

I have no issue with Tex signing for the most money, especially with a team that has a shot at the World Series--that's exactly what I would do if in his shoes, but come on. We know why he signed this contract.

Anyway, how is that "model" the Yankees deploy working out? Pay for free agents that have already reached the prime of their career and live with the downside...
