Andruw, We Hardly Knew Ye

It appears the Dodgers will pay Andruw Jones all the money he is owed, just over a longer period of time.

The agreement will allow Jones a fresh start elsewhere after a nightmare of a first season and provide the Dodgers with additional payroll flexibility that could be used to re-sign free-agent outfielder Manny Ramirez.

The Major League Baseball Players Association approved the unusual agreement because Jones will receive his entire salary, as well as the possible benefit of free agency should he be released.

So what team is going to take a chance on Jones? I would not pay him much, as the Dodgers are being more than generous.

The steroids era takes another victim...?

I don't get it. Does Jones get anything out of this, or does he just get less money (in present-value terms)? If this gets him his release, then I get it. Otherwise....

Given his current level of performance (which makes Juan Pierre look like Joe DiMaggio), even major league minimum--assuming the Dodgers released him and no one picked him up soon enough to have to eat his current salary--would be a waste of money. However, I suspect someone will take a shot at him.

So he gets spread out because the LAD made an insanely stupid deal?

Thanks for the links today, David.

bandit, the issue -- or at least one assumption -- is that this makes room for the Dodgers to buy Manny Ramirez' services for the next 2-3 years. Boras continues to get paid on Jones' contract, and from the Manny deal. Of course, the thing that subverts that argument is that the Dodgers have a lot of payroll coming off the books this year (Brad Penny and Derek Lowe, among others).
