Chipper on Trash Talk

SportingNews.com interviews Chipper Jones. He criticizes both the Mets and Phillies for their trash talk:

We won for 14 consecutive years, and you never, ever saw any bulletin board material. And now that these two teams are on top of the division, they can't keep their mouths shut. Just go play baseball. It's Cole Hamels now. It was Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Beltran the past couple of springs. These two teams are constantly going at each other verbally. You know, win with class, lose with class. Just keep your mouth shut and go play your game.

For 14 years, Atlanta was the most boring champion around. When I was at the World Series in 1999, the Yankees fans at Turner Field, greatly outnumbered, still managed to be louder than the Braves fans. Let the Mets and Phillies talk trash, and let them go down to the wire every year. Fans love this.

Chipper is right, but it seems that the chatter between the teams has gotten pretty silly. I seriously doubt either team pays much attention to it, except for maybe when guy who pitches one inning a night and has never thrown a pitch in the NL East chimes in. I think Mr. Rodriguez is going to be in for a rude awakening when he finds out he's not going to get to pitch against the Seattles', Texas, and Oaklands' of the world 15-20 times a season.
On the other hand, Spring Training in Florida is only about 7 weeks away. Maybe it would be a good time to take a road trip to Clearwater and PSL. :)

BTW, Happy New Year to you and yours Dave! Same goes for all your knowledgeable readers. See you all at the park!

Do the fans really love it? Which fans are these? All their trash talking just makes them seem stupid and immature. Of course, I'm sure that appeals to some fans, but are those the fans you want to appeal to?

I'm with you Saber - plus what do the NYM have to talk about - choking every year?

I agree Saber, it only impresses the hosts at ESPN and talk show jocks, not the fans. I'd like to think there is still something to be said for winning with class, which is what the Braves did. It's not their fault that the fans aren't always the loudest. I'd rather have my team go the post-season every year than listen to overpaid loudmouths make headlines for asinine comments.

As a mets fan I can say that I don't like it at all... but the media really blows it up to more than it really is. Regardless, Beltran and the rest of the team can talk all they want but they haven't proven a thing. Meanwhile, hamels calls the mets chokers and I'm fairly certain the mets fan base would have no problems agreeing with that assessment.

Whoa... Chipper Jones contributed my one of my favorite pieces of baseball trash talk of all time. ""Now all the Mets' fans can go home and put their Yankees stuff on," Chipper said. Although to be fair he says now, "I was a punk kid, I didn't know better. That's when I said it." While hes certainly changed his tune, I believe thats talking trash.
