No Manny in LA

The Dodgers withdrew their offer to Manny Ramirez:

According to the Dodgers' website, the team has pulled its initial offer to free agent outfielder Manny Ramirez. What that means exactly remains to be seen because the team says it will continue to negotiate with him.

I find this a strange negotiating strategy. At this point, they'd be bidding against themselves. Until there is a better bid on the table, why withdraw the offer? I suppose it's possible that no other team bids for Manny, and then the Dodgers come back with a lower offer, but the probability of that is pretty low.

There are a lot of great reasons to do this.

Two, for example:

1) It lets them claim that they made a fair offer to Manny if he goes elsewhere. The amount the offered is likely on part with what he'll accept, though not the same number of years.

2) It sets a tone for future negotiations with players, where the players feel pressure to accept an offer before it is withdrawn. This is great leverage.

Probably because their first offer was an insult. Did anyone really think that Manny went through the whole trouble of convincing the Red Sox to trade him so he could get out of the options for 2 years and $40 million so that he could take a deal that was for basically $5 million extra? Come on. Ned Colletti is a joke. If he wants us to believe he's making a serious effort, he's going to have to offer more than Andruw Jones money.

Manny is not worth more than three years. After that, he's a DH. So if Colletti wants him, he'll have to make it a profitable three years.

I think he could spend that elsewhere, however, with a better return. But I'm in the minority.
