It's a Good Thing Zevon is Dead

I drove my daughter back to school this afternoon. As we approached Boston, we switched to Mike FM (they play everything). They play Margaritaville, and when it finishes, I hear a familiar piano introduction. I say to my daughter, "This is a great combination, Margaritaville followed by Werewolves of London." She then tells me I'm listening to a Kid Rock song. So disappointing.

Here's how it should have been played:

So true...

Actually this Kid Rock song has managed to bastardize two songs... Werewolves of London and Sweet Home Alabama

I've had the same experience of disappointment, turned confusion, turned anger.

I gagged when I first heard that Kid Rock song. As a big fan of both Zevon and Skynyrd, it felt like a double sacrilege.

Once I got over that initial reaction, though, I started to appreciate Kid Rock's pseudo-mashup. (At least until it got overplayed to death.) It's fairly respectful of both songs, in that it's about the joy of listening to your favorite songs on the radio, a role "Werewolves of London" and "Sweet Home Alabama" fill for many people.

I remember that back when I was a teenaged Led Zeppelin fan I felt similarly disgusted on hearing the Beastie Boys' "Rhymin' and Stealin'" (which is built on the back of "When the Levee Breaks" by Zep.) Not to suggest any parity between Kid Rock and the far superior Beastie Boys, whom I eventually came to love.

Hopefully more people will end up exposed to Zevon's music (Skynyrd doesn't need the help) and discover how great he is. I would hate for people to hear Werewolves of London for the first time and go "Oh, it's that Kid Rock song!" but I think Werewolves is strong enough to survive the association.

Ha! I had the same experience driving with a friend (with clearly inferior music taste) who had the Kid Rock song on his iPod. Takes me back to the days when I would hear "Ice Ice Baby" coming on the radio and get excited because "Under Pressure" is such an awesome song, only to be left bitter and disappointed.
