The Trading Begins

The Marlins and Royals make a deal:

The Marlins made their first trade of the offseason Thursday, sending first baseman Mike Jacobs to Kansas City for right-handed reliever Leo Nuñez.

Jacobs is a one-dimensional power hitter. As one dimensions go, power is a good one. Nunez has seen his ERA come down each of the last three years. His real strength appears to be keeping the ball in the park, at least in 2008.

Moving Jacobs opens up a spot for Gaby Sanchez, who at the minor league level showed Jacobs power with a much better ability to get on base. If Sanchez comes up and posts a .350 OBA and a .470 slugging percentage, this will be a nice improvement for the Marlins.

Seems like Jacops should have brought a better player. What was the rush?

Man, the Royals still know how to acquire players they have no need for.

Wow, looks like the Fish still know how to pull off a trade. What are the Royals thinking?

Josh Phelps is probably a better player than Jacobs, with a similar skill set (except that he actually can take a walk), and he was available for free.

Trading away talented players like nunez when there is freely available talent that can do the same thing is a great way to stay at the bottom of the division forever. GJ, drayton!

KC also has Ryan Shealy who'd probably be a pretty comparable bat with a better glove, and 1B Kila Ka'aihue killing the ball in the low minors. (HT Rotoworld)

Stupid, nonsensical trade.

I realize that everyone likes to weigh in on trades right away (yes, myself included), but let's see how the rest of this off-season plays out before we pass this deal off as stupid and nonsensical. I'm not a Royals fan by any measure, but I'm willing to give Moore a pass for now. If he turns around and spins Jacobs to fill a few genuine need, this could make a lot of sense.

Maybe I overestimate Jacobs' value, though.

Sheely is 29 and spent the whole season in the minors last year as I believe Phelps did as well. Jacobs hit 32 HR and slugged over .500 in the bigs. Nunez pitched pretty well - but only threw 45 IP. I'm witht he 1st guy - seems like FL could have got more.

For one I expected the Jays to give up a bit more to get Jacobs.
