Tell'em, Tellem

Arn Tellem speaks about Mike Mussina and Jason Giambi.

Tellem said the story that Mussina was planning to make a decision by the end of the week is untrue. Tellem is going to visit Mussina in Montoursville on Friday so they can talk. But he doesn't necessarily expect Moose to give him a decision at that point. He'll file for free agency regardless, and Tellem said he wouldn't be surprised if Moose wants more time to think it over.

As for Giambi, he said the Big G's first choice by far is to stay with the Yankees and, as far as he knows, that door hasn't been closed. Giambi wants to work something out and so that's what they're exploring first.

I'm guessing the Yankees are more open to Mussina returning than Giambi at this point. If the Yankees can clear their plate of the DH types on the team, it would be okay for Jason to return in that capacity. New York, however, needs to move away from having three or four hitters best suited for duty only as a batter.

Correction: Fixed typo in Tellem's first name.

I believe it is Arn Tellem, not Art.

How are the NYY going to clear their plate of DH types with Matsui, Posada and Damon under contract?

The Yanks are going to be in trouble for a bit with Posada.

Giving him that big contract kills them, especially now that he might not even catch again! Paying him over 10 million to be a worse 1B than Giambi is terrible. In all honesty, I wouldn't mind the Yanks re-signing Giambi if he were to come back in the 3-5 million range. I don't see the Yanks finding/signing a better 1B offensively OR defensively and they don't currently have one on their roster or in their farm system.

On the topic of sticking revered catchers at 1B, I envision Posada about as willing to do that as Mike Piazza was. In other words, the walls of the new stadium will crumble before Posada will do it. I understand he probably should do it, but he has a tough team leader persona (unlike Piazza) that doesn't match up with being shipped out to 1B. Also, I don't see him as the type who would like to gab with all the runners as they stop by 1B. Giambi liked that part.

I also don't picture Posada playing 1B real well - not that Giambi could.
