Game Suspended

The game will not be completed tonight. They'll try to get it in tomorrow.

Game 5 will resume in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday on FOX at 8 p.m. ET, weather permitting.

Major League Baseball chief operating officer Bob DuPuy said the game could be resumed on Tuesday, but the forecast calls for more rain.

I believe this is a first. World Series games have been postponed before, but at least in my life time I don't remember a suspension.

re: suspension of a game for rain

but it's not a first as far as the commissioner of baseball shafting the phillies.

during the 1977 NLCS against the dodgers, the commissioner refused to call a game for rain despite dreadful conditions that caused the phillies to lose a game to the dodgers. that game should have been suspended. that was Bowie Kuhn. The thought was widespread that the commish was favoring LA.

here, when the phillies were winning, the commissioner again refused to call the game when the phillies were winning, but quickly called it when it was to the phillies disadvantage to do so.

the thought here is that the commish is favoring tampa bay, a weaker franchise than Philly.

The commish is favoring not giving the Phillies the championship because of rain. As a fan having my team win because some fat man with grey hair walked on the field and said so is not how I would want a championship.

With apologies to the conspiracy theorists, Bud Selig said after the game that he would not have allowed the deciding game of the World Series to be concluded early by rain. In other words, even if the Rays hadn't tied the score, the same suspension would have happened.

The suspension clearly favors the Rays because Hamels won't be able to continue. But the fact is, the field was unplayable and getting worse. Unless you think Bud Selig seeded the clouds and caused the weather, you can't blame this on him or the umps.

Help me - how was it not an official game going back to the last full inning?

It’s time for one more rule change: Every postseason game should be played to it’s completion. Any game, no matter the score or inning, would be suspended if necessary and completed prior to the next game. There is no excuse for the “what ifs” of last night.

As a Red Sox fan, I shudder to think about how the fans/media would have reacted around the country if it had been the Red Sox instead of the Rays. Or, for that matter, if it were the Red Sox instead of the Phillies!

With it being a World Series game, especially a potentially series deciding game, I would want my favorite team to complete the game, even if they were up 15-1 with 2 outs in the 9th. This is not some blah game in the middle of June. I would never want the weather to hand my team the victory, even if a comeback by the other team seemed impossible. And since this game was super close, and is currently tied, I don't see why any Phillies fan has a problem with the suspension. Unless they have no faith that the Phillies can hang on to a 3-1 series lead, and if you don't have that much faith in them, how can you call yourself a fan.
And this is coming from a fan of a team that has never even been to the World Series.

Don't you have to play by the rules at the beginning of the game - not make them up as you go along?

For Art K above: Philly "The Franchise" pitcher and later Hall of Famer, Steve Carlton was pitching in that rainy 1977 game. In the '70s, did any team have a better advantage than the Phils when Carlton was pitching? What advantage did the Dodgers have?
