Managerial Criticism

Patrick Sullivan wasn't too happy with Terry Francona Saturday night/Sunday morning.

I wonder what game francona was watching in the 5th? It is really difficult to understand the benefit of letting Beckett give up 6 runs without pulling him and then going through Lopez in one pitch. I remember looking at the score in the middle of the fifth thinking that Francona had to send a new pitcher out for the fifth. Maybe that is the geniusof Maddon, by sticking with Kazmir so long he was able to make Francona think it was OK to let his starting pitcher give up 8 runs. And that was without giving up a grand slam to boot, not even a two run homer! He could have pulled beckett after any run total, but he left him in for all of them (more or less...)

Has anyone on the face of the earth other than Terry Francona ever thought it was a good idea to bring in Javier Lopez? Have you ever heard anyone else say, "hey this would be a good time to bring in Lopez", without the Sox having at least a 10 run lead?

I'm still trying to figure out why Timlin was an acceptable pitcher to a) bring on to the roster and b) let pitch without a "Gagne-proof" lead. His stats vs. TB this year in the regular season: 0-2, 4 IP, 5H, 1 HR, 5 BB, 9 ERA.

This is the second time in the playoffs an extra-innings game has happened without Terry going with the long arm in his bullpen. Maybe I'm unsure of the point of having a "5th-starter" type arm in the bullpen, but wouldn't it be used for either a case where the starter clearly doesn't have it (such as last nite) or when there's a long, drawn-out extra innings game (also such as last nite)?
