A Little Whine with your Loss

Defensive Indifference takes John Lackey to task for whining about the Angels loss.

Lackey deserves a trip to the woodshed. If they had played better - not made so many mistakes and got some hits with men on base - they'd have won 3-1. He's going to be Mr. Popularity in the locker room now. What a dumbass.

Nice breakdown by DI.

The Angels might have hit better and pitched better, but did they play better? No. The team behind Lackey didn't execute under pressure.

I don't think Anderson gets to Pedroia's double in another park and the ball is rolling to the wall for a triple.

Have to admit, I have a sneaking admiration for Lackey's honesty. Sure, he should have been more diplomatic, as David says elsewhere about Rickey Henderson.

But Henderson had an Everest-sized ego and didn't try to hide it. Similarly, Lackey was sore about the series outcome and didn't try some p.c. disguise.

He'll get trashed in the media for his comments, and he deserves it to some extent. But at least his remarks were more fun than the usual we'll-be-back cliches.

They're even more pathetic considering the fact that he's just wrong - the Angels are not better than the Red Sox. Take a look at their pythag records: the Sox were almost ten games better than the Angels in that department. Once again, a team that massively overachieves in the regular season sees their luck run out in the playoffs. I actually just did a post on this issue, but the playoffs may be less of a crapshoot than we all think.

It's not being undiplomatic - it's being a crybaby. They didn't play well enough to win - they lost. Crying about the ballparks and the official scoring? As Bart Simpson would say 'Luuuuuu-zer'

Well, I wouldn't put too much emphasis on these comments. It's really the worst time for an interview and the press knows it.

Like I said, Lackey will get trashed for the comments. But I do like how he didn't try to hide his opinions behind the usual tedious cliches. Bitter is better than bland, IMO.

Just a comment on run diff, which I respect as a measure of merit. But the actual won-loss record deserves some respect, too.

This was an extremely close series: two one-run games including a twelve-inning marathon, a two-run game that was tied going to the ninth, and a three-run game that went to the ninth 2-1. A few breaks here and there, and the Angels could be going to the ALCS.

At least he talks to the media after a loss.Krod ,who celibrates a 3 run save in July like it was game 4 of a world series refueses to talk after a tough loss. The player that missed the squeeze last nite, would not talk to anyone either. If you won't talk after a loss, shut up & walk off a field after a win.

Obviously this was right in the heat of the moment for a pretty pumped up guy. He said what he felt. Ask any major league clubhouse and you're damm right they think they're better than the other team.

Some how a reporter got a real answer from an athlete, and we critisize the player.

It's no wonder players are coached to such anodyne interviews.

I don't like Lackey, I don't like the angles and yeah, the Red Sox are probably better. But to criticize this comment is low, and lacks compassion.

OK - I'm sorry he's a crybaby.
