Happy Halladay

Roy Halladay wins his 20th game in style, going nine innings as the Blue Jays down the Yankees 8-2. It's the second time Roy reached the 20 win plateau. Three of the six hits off Hallady game via the bat of Brett Gardner easily the worst hitter in the lineup tonight.

At 131-66, Halladay is one win short of a .667 winning percentage. That's a remarkable number given that Toronto in that time is a .506 team. Without Roy, they'd be well under .500.

After he won 22 in '03 and pitched 261 innings he was hurt the next 2 years - hopefully that's not the case next year. I think Burnett's going to walk and Marcum is out for '09 - MacGowan is coming back from an injury. I think they're going to be back to looking up at .500 next year.

Why do people assume the team will stand still?

Until we know for certain that the Jays aren't going to extend Burnett, it's wrong to start analyzing the teams chances for next year assuming he's gone.

However, I agree - if they DO stand still and let Burnett walk and attempt to replace both his and Marcum's production internally, they will be facing an uphill battle unless one or two of Romero, Ricky, Purcey, David, or Cecil, Brett make a massive leap forward. I put Purcey in there because while he is a part of the teams plans, if he takes a step forward he could be a decent # 3 or a good #4, instead of a shaky #4 which he is now (capable of shutting down the best offense any night but also capable of blowing up against a team of blind nuns).

Roy Halladay is the best pitcher in the world. He's a stud. With better offensive support he could easily have 25 wins this year, such is life.
