Ump in the Way
The Red Sox just lost a run or two due to an umpire. It wasn't a bad call. With men on first and second and two out, Jeff Bailey hit a scorcher down the third base line. The ball was headed toward the corner, but hit the umpire and bounded back to the infielders. The third base coach already waved Bay around toward home, and Varitek was almost at third. Bay got caught in a run down and the Indians got out of the inning with a 4-2 lead. Remember that play if for some reason the Yankees end up tying Boston at the end of the season.

An umpire also took a ball to the midsection yesterday in the White Sox-Royals game. It was scorcher down the first base line and cost DeWayne Wise a double, perhaps a triple.
Thanks, David. As a Sox fan, it's already white-knuckle time, with the nightmare of the Sox losing their remaining games and the Yanks winning theirs, forcing a playoff game. I don't want to relive that memory from '78.
