Managerial Defibrillator

The Brewers admit the main reason for firing Ned Yost was to kick start the team:

Sveum admitted that there was intended shock value to making the managerial switch.

"We're hoping it's a shock reaction to get (the players) to perform up to their level," Sveum said. "We're trying to send a shockwave through this team."

They're scoring 2.7 runs per game in September, go something needs to kick the offense into gear. Remember, too, that with both Sabahtia and Sheets free agents this winter, the Brewers put all their resources into winning this year. They can't take the chance of missing the playoffs after their mid-season moves.

It's too bad Yost didn't get the chance to finish. I questioned some of his moves with pitchers lately, especially how he used Sabathia. He'd allow him to stay in a blowout to get a shutout, but pull him with a relatively low pitch count in a 2-1 game. His use of the bullpen was questionable. On the other hand, he did try batting Jason Kendall ninth and the pitcher eighth, so he was at least open to new ideas.

Is it possible that there was more than just the shock value involved too? After all Ted Simmons was re-assigned too. Doesn't that suggest that there was a philosophical difference between the front office and Yost?

unexpected move? you betcha. But I like it. The Brewers have nothing to loose by doing this. As far as managers, the Brew Crew can find better for next year. Give Joey Cora an interview. Take a look at current teams having sucess. The Red Sox have new blood up and down the roster now. The RAYS are a contender and the Brew Crew has drafted extremely well the last bunch of years. The common denominator? Their farm systems. This is a calculated, and I think good move by the Brewers. They'll be ok without Ned. The farm system is churning out players for them. The Brewers sputtered last year down the stretch too. Tampa and Milw'kee are two examples of small town teams making big noise. Joe Madden of the Rays...super job! The decision of ownership to can Yost, against the GM Melvin's stance.....super job.
Tough decisions make good teams (unless you're the Mets whose owner Fred Wilpon pissed off his business partner and former half owner of the team so much,- just drove him nuts, that Nelson Doubleday sold out in 2002 (?) and left....and with him the Mets' better baseball sense). ooops...did I say that?

Your post title elicited a giggle in these quarters.

I recommend post 66 by poster Harveys Wallbangers in the BTF thread to thoroughly explain the necessity of firing Yost. He was clearly failing to make optimal decisions.

As I write this, the Cubs are beating the Brewers 3-0 in Chicago. I understand why Yost was fired, but it may not matter if the pitching doesn't hold up.
