Lilly Through Five

Ted Lilly sets the Astros down 1-2-3 in the fifth, picking up his sixth strikeout of the afternoon.

Update: Derrek Lee homers in the top of the 6th and the Cubs extend their lead to 4-0 as once again they're holding the Astros hitless.

He's through six.

Update: Loretta breaks up the no-hitter in the seventh. The shutout remains intact, however, as the Cubs lead 6-0.

This is turning into a huge disaster for the Astros. When was the last time (if ever) a team was no-hit in back to back games?

I think Cecil Cooper is on the verge of doing bodily harm to Bud Selig.

Never. Here's some history on a team following up a no-hitter with a long no-hit bid against the same opponent:

The effort appears to have tied a record set in 1981, when Nolan Ryan of the Astros threw a no-hitter against the Dodgers on Sept. 26 in the Astrodome, and Don Sutton followed up the next day with six innings of no-hit ball. Sutton finished with a two-hitter.

In case you were wondering, the famous doubleheader in which Paul Dean threw an no-hitter against the Dodgers and Dizzy Dean held on to one for seven innings does not qualify for this record, since the no-hitter was in the second game, not the first. (Sept. 21, 1934). Supposedly Dizzy said, "If I'd a-known he was gonna throw a no-hitter I'd a-thrown one, too."

Similarly, the St. Louis Browns threw no-hitters against the White Sox on consecutive days (by Koob and Groom on May 5 and 6, 1917), but they were not consecutive, since the May 6 effort was the second game of a doubleheader.

I'm short on time and I have not been able to double-check every instance in the Retrosheet database. More later tonight.

That seems to be about it. The next best efforts in the Retrosheet era are hardly worth listing: only 3.1 innings in the game following the no-hitter.
