Royal Pen in the Neck

After the Twins only score two runs off Brandon Duckworth in five innings, the Royals bullpen shuts down Minnesota's offense the rest of the way. After Mayhay allowed a hit and a walk over 1 2/3 innings of work, the rest of the pen pitched nearly perfectly, not allowing a hit or walk over the last 3 1/3 innings. DeJesus singles home a run in the tenth, and the Royals take home a 3-2 win.

This was a game the Twins needed to win. Looking at the superiority of the Twins lineup and starting pitcher, the team blew an easy one here. The offense wasted an eight inning, two run outing by Liriano, and if they lose the division by one game, fans can point their fingers at this contest.

I think there are many other games that I'll point to when I look back at the Twins season which I fear is going to end up with them 1 or 2 games back. A 6-0 lead at Seattle is one. A Joe Nathan error on a bunt in Oakland two weeks ago is another. Jesse Crain's 3-game stretch of brilliance a few weeks back also comes to mind.

But every team can find those games. I'm hoping for 6-4 on this road trip and being within 2 games before the White Sox series. That will at least give them hope.

All told, a good season. What other team could have lost Santana and Hunter and improved? The only comparison I can come up with was a Mariner's team that, over three years lost A-Rod, The Big Unit, and Junior and then won 116 games. Amazing.
