Pena in the Fourteenth

It's still 1-1 in the fourteenth as Mike Timlin enters the game with one out and the bases empty. After recording the second out, he allows two singles that brings Carlos Pena to the plate. He lifts a three-run homer into the Monster Seats, and Tampa Bay takes a 4-1 lead. It's the first runs scored since the bottom of the third as both pitching staffs pitches extremely well to this point.

Update: A double and walk with no one out brings David Ortiz to the plate representing the tying run.

Update: Percival walks Ortiz on four pitches. Maddon and the trainer come out to get him, believing he's hurt. Troy argues with Joe, but leaves the game. The bases are loaded with no one out. This game may never end. Kevin Youkilis is scheduled to bat next.

Update: Youkilis hits a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2. Jason Bay gets a chance for a big hit.

Update: Bay strikes out. He's 0 for 7 on the night.

Update: Cora flies out to center, and the Rays win 4-2. A great series for Tampa as they take two out of three in a ballpark in which they lost their first seven contests this season. They extend their lead to 2 1/2 games over Boston and reduce their magic number to 16.

Given the great games played between Tampa Bay and Boston and Tampa Bay and the Angels this season, I'd really love to see an ALCS with one of those matchups.

Someone should ask Francona why he pitched Jon P in Sunday 7-1 game vs Texas with 3 big ones coming up with TB. Francona is a player's mgr, but not a very good pitching selector.
Mike Timlin is a great guy, honest to a fault. Even admits that his wife is a better athlete. He has 4 rings (2 with Jays). He should have retired last year with 4th ring. He just isn't reliable anymore at 42.

Francona is a player's mgr, but not a good pitching mgr, re: leaving Wakefield in for 7 runs in short stint vs TX Sat. Good pitching mgrs would never do that, espec with extra Sept pitchers on bench.

2 horrible calls - Ellsbury was safe live and was clearly safe in the replay - terrible call on the force out with Iwamura - replay shows he juggled the catch and there was no relay play.

I'm watching the game thinking they better win before they have to use Timmer. With one out why didn't they let Lopez pitch to Bartlett and Iwamura?
