Just Wondering

Twins fans, did the team make the right move trading Johan Santana? Right now, the Twins are having a surprisingly good season but are faltering. If the team coughed up the money for Johan, they might be running away with the division and have a better chance if they actually make the playoffs. Is the future so bright that you think the team made the right move trading a possible World Championship this season for future success?

Twin's problem is their bullpen, not their starting pitching. If they wouldn't have gotten that boost of offense from Casilla, Busher, and Span around mid-season, they wouldn't be cracking .500 right now. Even if they would have kept Santana, and moved one of the starters they have now into the bullpen, it wouldn't have helped much... everyone else is getting shelled! Even Nathan has started to look human, last time I saw him close, he appeared to have the weight of the world on his shoulders.

I recall an essay Bill James did in the 80's where he compared before and after team records for team that signed/lost Class 'A' free agents.

Surprisingly, the comparison showed that, on average, the team that lost a star player to free agency improved the following year while the team that gained the star got worse.

Watching my Tigers struggle through this year, that comparison keeps coming back to me - having taken Cabrerra and Willis from the Marlins, the Tigers got significantly worse and the Marlins are significantly better, contrary to all the prognostications.

The same applies to the Twins. As for the Mets, while thier late-swoon took thier record down, as of this time last year, they were ahead of this years pace.

In most cases (Willis being the exception) you can't blame it on the player(s) who changed hands, it just seems to happen.

Has anyone done such a study covering the last 25 or 30 years to see if the pattern holds up?
