Not Ready for Playoff Time?
The Mets finish the sweep of the Brewers Wednesday afternoon by a score of 9-2. Church hit a grand slam and Schneider added a solo shot in the first as the Mets took a 6-0 lead and never looked back. The much maligned Mets relievers gave up just one hit over 2 1/3 innings of work.
The Brewers are staying in the race by crushing the weaker teams in the league. They played the Cubs the last series in July and were swept. Starting with that series, they are 1-9 against playoff contenders Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, 19-4 against everyone else. It makes you wonder how well they might do if they reach the post season.
Doesn't really hold, because the Brewers would be banking on Sheets and (especially) Sabathia in a playoff series, and both the Dodgers and Mets were lucky enough to miss CC in the rotation. The Dodgers also missed Sheets, and the Brewers might well have beaten the Mets in the first game of their series if Sheets hadn't left after five innings with a strained groin.
The Cubs series, eh, what can I say. The Brewers SHOULD have won the first game, but there was that horrifying Rickie Weeks throwing error...
Yeah - CC was fantastic in the playoffs last year and Sheets is hurt. At least they'll get the Mets or Phils in the first round.
