re: luis castillo

another great veteran player the mets have that is past his prime.

a key component of the great marlins teams that won two world series, castillo was truly a great hitter and a good fielder in his younger days.

but like shawn green and moises alou before him, this is another veteran player the mets have picked up a couple of years past his relevant playing days.

castillo's skills were always those of a young player and he has not played well as a thirty plus year old player.

but once upon a time he was one of the best 2basemen in the nl, and rightly feared as a hitter.

as for myself, no matter what damian easley or anyone else has done on 2d, i'd still keep castillo around, if for no other reason than castillo knows how to win. he's been a part of several winning ballclubs and knows the intangibles of winning.

more important, castillo has been in the playoffs and knows what it takes there.

no one has ever said that damian easley was ever an integral part of a world series team.

Castillo is still a decent hitter who has always reliably put up an above-average OBP. Unfortunately, his defense has become a liability, but Damion Easley is just as old and broken-down; he and Argenis Reyes are replacement-level utility IFs.

If Castillo comes back (and assuming he can hit better than .077 with a larger sample size), he is their best option for now, unless they think Argenis is THAT much better defensively.

Castillo was part of 1 title team.Great glove ,no power, below average baserunner for a player with his speed. He was not an important piece of the Marlins title. If the mets need him to get over the hump this year ,they are screwed.
